Iris,
after three years of an on-and-off relationship, still loves Jasper Bloom, one
of her colleagues at a newspaper publishing company in London. She still longs
for him, despite the guy's infidelity that hurts her feelings.
On the other side of the
world, Amanda, in Malibu, California, finds out that Ethan, her boyfriend,
sleeps with his lady receptionist. Amanda dumps him, and decides to take a
break from her job, and her destroyed love life, which is taking too much of
her time. While surfing the web, she finds another woman willing to exchange
houses with her for two weeks, Iris of Surrey, England. Amanda arrives in
Surrey and finds herself bored in the village. Meanwhile, Iris is surprised at
the luxury of Amanda's house. Amanda thinks about packing her things and
returning home, until she meets Graham, Iris's older brother, who comes into
Iris's house to sleep there because he is drunk. The two instantly have a
connection and resort to a one-night stand, thinking that they will never see
each other again anyway. The next morning comes and Amanda tells Graham of her
plans to leave. Disappointed, Graham still invites her to a dinner with his
friends in case Amanda will change her mind. At the airport, Amanda realises
that she will miss Graham and, later that night, there she is back in the pub and
Graham and Amanda start to build a relationship, despite some worries with the
phone calls Graham receives.
In
California, Iris begins to know Amanda's neighbours, including an old man named
Arthur, a script writer for a number of classic movies, with whom she becomes
friends. Iris, together with Miles, helps Arthur to appreciate his work and
makes him realise his worth among other writers. While hanging out with Iris,
Miles spots his girlfriend Maggie cheating, and eventually breaks up with her.
Iris consoles Miles and collaborates with him to compose some music for
Arthur's ceremony.
Amanda
and Graham enjoy their relationship together, and Amanda even gets to meet
Graham's two daughters and learns that Graham is a widower. Graham confesses
his love to Amanda.
Jasper
comes to Iris in California and pleads with her to come back to him despite his
upcoming marriage. Iris declines, same as Miles does with Maggie. Miles decides
to join Iris in England during New Year's Eve and starts a relationship.
It is
an above-average romantic comedy. It tells us that love has its place, and
really, there is someone made especially for you. This is a film packed with
sweet and healthy scenes, very much appealing to those who prefer to be mushy;
not to mention, the performances of the actors and actresses, which do justice
to the characters they portray. This film is highly recommended.
